The Forest Horror Game, Scary Open-World Survival

Last Updated on May 22, 2015

The Forest is an in-development horror game for PC. It’s vast game world is fully ready to be explored and it’s up to you to survive.

This game is a sand box game with a bunch of crafting elements, a variety of weapons and a custom building feature that allows you to build a fort however you see fit.

This game is definitely a must play title. Right now the game costs about $15 and in my opinion it is a steal at that price. Let’s take a look at the system requirements for The Forest.

System Requirements

Minimum:

    • OS: Windows 7
    • Processor: Intel Dual-Core 2.4 GHz
    • Memory: 4 GB RAM
    • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT
    • DirectX: Version 9.0
    • Hard Drive: 5 GB available space
    • Sound Card: DirectX®-compatible

Recommended:

    • OS: Windows 7
    • Processor: Quad Core Processor
    • Memory: 4 GB RAM
    • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560
    • DirectX: Version 9.0
    • Hard Drive: 5 GB available space
    • Sound Card: DirectX®-compatible

As you can see, it’s not going to take an extremely powerful build to run this game. Even on the lowest graphic settings this game looks pretty amazing.

Even though it is still in its pre-alpha stages, The Forest still has enough to do to keep yourself entertained. The game updates just about every 15 days. This way you’re guaranteed new content that they generate for the next build. The main menu of the game displays how much time is left before they add in more features.

Here is an early version of the main menu screen, at the bottom you can see where it displays when the next content update will be coming out.

The game starts you out in an airplane. You’re sitting next to what I think is the player character’s son. All of a sudden the plane comes crashing down into a vast forest and a mutant human looking creature takes your son and walks off into The Forest. It’s up to you to craft materials and weapons to survive. There is currently no real goal except to survive as many days as you can possibly survive. I suggest starting by opening up the survival tutorial book and going step by step by that guide in order to have an optimal survival experience.

Here are some current features for The Forest

Prepare yourself to enter a living, breathing world where every single tree/plant in the game can be chopped down for resources. Go underground to explore a vast network of caves and lakes that are inside of the cave systems that are found throughout the forest.

  • Chop down trees to build a camp, or start a fire to keep warm. Hunt/scavenge for food to keep yourself from starving to death.
  • Build a small shelter or a large beach side fort. Execute traps and several defenses to keep your area safe.
  • Make sure that you explore and build your home site during the day. Be sure to sleep before night otherwise prepare yourself to defend your base at. Craft many weapons and tools. Hunker down during the evening or bring the fight right to the front lines of the enemy.
  • Defend yourself against a clan of genetic mutant enemies that have their own beliefs, families and morals. They almost appear almost human.
  • Use stealth to evade enemies, or evoke them directly with weapons built from sticks and stones.
  • Co-op multiplayer is already implemented

Here are some planned features coming out in the very near future:

  • Many more animals – fish, snakes, frogs and bird types. The developers really want to bring the world to life with a large variety of fauna.
  • More trapping and hunting varities.
  • Expanded A.I. – They are trying some really cool stuff for their AI and plan to keep it changing and improving over the course of the alpha builds.
  • More areas to explore – over the course of time new areas will be added and unveiled and the game world’s cave system will continue to develop downwards.
  • More building items – More options in what you can construct and what’s available to use.
  • More crafting capabilities, more items that can be combined and more exciting things to create.
  • New creatures – as we unveil more and more of the world and its caves over the course of the alpha they’ll also be introducing many new terrifying creatures along with a few surprises.
  • Graphical improvements – the developers want to keep pushing what’s possible, making the world look, feel and run better.
  • Many user interface tweaks and polishing.
  • Additional game modes, including a no-enemies cheat mode for players who want a calmer experience.
  • Full oculus rift compatibility for the most immersive experience possible. * Note, this will not be available in first version of alpha*

Here is a game play trailer for The Forest:

I’m very excited for the future of this game especially with the virtual reality compatibilities that they have planned. This feature will fully immerse any player into what I think is one of the most epic horror games to have ever been released.

I also can’t wait for some sort of a story beackground to be implemented into the game. I really want to see if they develop a story for the mutant humans that have set up multiple camps in The Forest and I’m also really curious as to why they are there…

So what do you guys of The Forest horror game? Is it a game that seems interesting to you?

Let me know in the comments below if you’re going to try to take on The Forest! 😀
